Along with rhinos, elephants are probably my favourite animal. I photographed most of these in Wasgamuwa National Park in Sri Lanka.
I was there volunteering on a conservation project looking at human/elephant conflict. Tasks included interviewing villagers, checking electric fences and sifting through elephant dung to see what they'd been eating!
We went into the park to observe and photograph the elephants for future identification. On one occasion two herds gathered around our vehicle for nearly two hours. They generally paid little attention to us, although occasionally one of the matriarchs would come over to peer through the windows.
One of the first things you notice when observing elephants is how protective they are of their young. This group was typical in the way they surrounded and protected the baby.
The trip was organised by Biosphere Expeditions (link below), who I am happy to recommend.
